LFD in my optical fiber terminal

End of December I switched my tv-telephone-internet to the new optical fiber network.
I was very happy with this switch because I could terminate my satellite dish tv and improve my internet speed from 2 Mbit to 200 Mbit.
The fiber is terminated with a so called DKT from COMEGA. This unit splits the signal into 3 parts: tv (DVB-C), telephone and Internet.

But after a few weeks I found out that on certain bands (especially 20 M) in certain directions (especially 330 – 030 degrees) my glasfiberterminal ‘crashed’. The RF-signal for DVB died, while internet and telephone were still running. Full reset (power down/up) did reset the unit.
But I remember one day that after transmitting (North) the whole unit stopped working and had to be physically replaced …..

My provider does know about the problem and is testing a solution but up till now (3 months later) no improvement.
I tried to isolate the unit for RF like shielding with grounded silverpaper.

 

 

But no real improvement, especially on 20M things go bad. 100 Watt with the UB-50 beaming North is enough to kill the DKT. The tower is 9 meter from the DKT, the antenne is 10 meter up.

So I entered a complaint at the Dutch ‘supervisor’ Agentschap telecom.
They requested a list of measurement data in order to analyze the situation.
Today I did some measurements.

DXCC on 160M and repairing the SteppIR beam

This morning received qsl via LOTW for the qso on 160M with A92IO on Dec. 7. This is qsl no. 100 so my 10th band DXCC. Especially 160M is quite difficult, most time signals are marginal. Beverages are needed to improve RX but also to defend against EU-qrm. Radiation pattern for a beverage is much lower than for the inverted-L.
I’ll wait for some more qsl’s (HK, V5) before submitting to ARRL-DXCC-desk.
Total count on 160M now 110 countries.

Another way to defend against local-&EU-qrm is having a good trx.
So I bought a TS-590S (second hand). The down-conversion on the low bands and roofing filter must be able to eliminate the strong signals in the neighberhood (1 Kc, maybe less).
This weekend Steve Perry contest on 160M will be the first test.

Meanwhile I’m still reparing my SteppIR shafts.

Very strange some parts very heavily damaged and 5 cm further no scratch at all. This is not simply done by birds. Some parts no paint at all, some parts the paint is 100% as new.

Via the newsgroup I got in touch with Peter PA2DXY who advised me on repairing the elements with 2-component glasfiber repairkit and UV-resistent green paint (Need more info? mail me)
A lot of work but hope to qrv in February (after my holiday).

Guess I have been lucky last night.
We had freezing rain that lasted until the morning, when the temperatures rose again above zero.
Some damage but repairable.

The 160M inverted-L survived by a miracle.
The top was bending very much but didn’t break. Guess the fiber is still rather fresh.

But the main reason for surviving was that the horizontal part of the wire had landed in a tree.
This lift saved my 160M system….

About 0.5 cm of ice was on the wires. What would have been the result without this lift?

This summer I had planned a trip to Asia, diving in Malaysia. The period was nearly the same as the expedition PT0S. Things happen.
But when I came home the expedition was still running, and rumors were that the end-date was postponed till after the cqww-contest. So no hurry…

Wednesday afternoon re-erected the 80M inv. L, for safety I had lowered it to the ground it can be quit windy in November!
Then I tried to work PT0S for a new country on 15M & 17M but my SteppIR failed to calibrate! Not sure what the reason is, but in wintertimes calibration of the SteppIR always fails. manual adjustment of the length of the elements worked but is variable, not stable. Before I left all was OK, and coming back it is not working properly.
Also the DVK (audio-wav’s) from N1MM to the TS-2000 is not working anymore. It was working OK in the CQWW-SSB…

Thursday morning I started on 80M and I was lucky, very good condx and easy qso. My first with PT0S on 80M, not to most common band to start with.
I managed to work them on 5 bands and 2 modes. I hope that all of them are OK, no SLIM-qso’s hopefully.
Today again 2 qso’s, 2 new bands, 3rd mode. 160M was in bad shape, I heard them calling cq a long time about 319 qsb but not many qso’s were made.

Total 7 bands and 3 modes. At the end of an expedition pile-ups are shorter and easier to work. But waiting till the end has the risk that the expedition ends unexpectedly….

then started to work on the 80M vertical when I came in the shack and worked GM7PKT/p in IO76, very rare to work on tropo!
Tropo has been rare this year but today was great!

When the vertical was ready it was not OK, best SWR 1:2 and Z=60 ohm on 4 Mc, so have to work on it tomorrow.
But then 9M4SLL (Spratly) came in on RTTY which I managed to work in a few calls.
D64K on 12M RTTY took more than one hour but is on the log.
I worked D64K on all higher bands including 6M yesterday via TEP. But 30M and lower will take some time. I wait a little bit the expedition will stay until August 21.

first qso’s on 4M

This morning excellent Es on 4M to ES en South OH. Although I only have 25W , 20 meter RG-58 (about -3 db) and an open dipole, I managed to work 8 stations also new DXCC’s, although the ARRL is not into 4M/70MHz yet.
Real sporadic E: either you hear&work them, or not.

Working with the transverter is OK, but using the Flex-1500 with PowerSDR is not easy. The waterfall display is nice but tuning is something to learn. And only USB for tx because my key is connected to the HF-set.

So I think it is better to change to another setup: TS-2000 in transverter-mode, N1MM in transverter-mode. Then I have all the benefits of the integrated workplace, logging, macro-keys in N1MM, RTTY (or Iscat or whatever).

The 4 ele LFA-beam for 4M is still under construction. First some parts were missing and now the rains have ‘improved’, monsoon time. I still have to tune the beam and that is something to do outside…

Yesterday there was Es on 2M, only short openings but good distance to UC6A (2500 km, new locator-square) and US8ZAL. Overall Es on 2M is not that good in this part of EU, the Aurora is to strong. Today a new CME is arriving so I assume Es will go down again.

qrv 4 meter: to late!

I decided to go for 4 M/70 MHz and use my flexradio-1500 as input for a transverter. I was very lucky to find the ME4T transverter in the online-market, only 10 minutes after putting my add the deal was completed! And a dipole for free, tnx PA2DW :-))

But setting up the transverter was more complicated than I thought. After opening it (yes, every radioamateur opens a box he just bought!) it was clear that the input attenuation was already there (a variable resistor) so my input of 0 dbm (1 mW) was not enough to get any output… But I only found that after a long time of trying, measuring, reading the manual (which was very old and not up-to-date with the inside of the box).

Alas, now I have 0,5 W input for 25 W output on my dipole. And no conditions on Es whatsoever, Aurora rules. To late for this season..

Next project will be to connect Flexradio-PSDR to N1MM via virtual ports & VAC. It just started to rain (normal Dutch summer) so time enough.
